Technological advances within the realm of sports have
greatly improved the interaction between fans and their favorite
team/organization/club. Through constant R&D, and market research, many
organizations rely on technology to stay connected with their fan base. In my
own experience I have seen technology such as Wifi and RFID tags used to
improved user experience, so that’s why I believe they are a great resource in
this matter.
Many stadiums and arenas have grown to an enormous size, and
connection is the key to a great event. From fan relations, to social media,
and even contests/prize a giveaway, Wi-Fi keeps everyone connected at all
times. Many teams have installed repeaters through out to connect you as close
as the parking lot to the fan experience, even giving away early prizes to fans
connected with the team through social media. This also gives the fans a way to
share the experience with their social circle that are not in attendance. This
is what many teams are banking on, because this increases the conversation from
a two-way conversation to a super highway. Connecting with other social circles
through a simple tweet or post.
Another cool technology is the RFID that can be worn as a
wristband like at Disney, or even as a commemorative ring. This technology
allows you to have access to certain areas, participate in certain promotions,
and deals as well. This also helps with crowd control and keeping the flow of
traffic moving into the complex. Picture a fan entering the arena with a
programed RFID that has his tickets, beer and concession pre-purchases
(Discounted Rate), and club seating access all on one wristband. This could be
a great advantage to premium, and season ticket holders. So as you can see
technology not only increases fan experience, but fuels the flames of
organizations consistent drive to improve their reach, and brand notoriety.
